REMODEL PLUMBING / UTAH COST GUIDE

# Bathroom remodel plumbing cost, explained.

Moving the toilet, changing the shower valve and setting new fixtures are very different jobs. Compare a bathroom quote against the layout and exact fixtures, including who opens the surfaces and who makes them watertight again.

A SECOND OPINION BEFORE YOU AGREE

## Why are my bathroom plumbing quotes so far apart?

Check whether they price the same layout, fixtures and finish work. Keeping the toilet in place can be very different from moving its drain through a finished floor. A cheap plumbing-only proposal may leave demolition, waterproofing and tile to someone else. Compare those responsibilities and any allowances before comparing totals.

**Ask before you sign**

Which fixtures and finish repairs are included, and what changes to the existing pipes are you pricing?

[Link to this answer ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/bathroom-remodel-plumbing/#quick-answer>)[Evidence and diagnosis ↓](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/bathroom-remodel-plumbing/#cost-factors>)

MAKE THE PRICES COMPARABLE

## Before you approve that quote.

### Are the fixtures staying where they are?

A same-location fixture replacement and a new layout are different jobs. Mark any moved toilet, tub or shower on the plan and have the quote describe the pipe changes and access needed. Do not compare two bathroom totals until they use the same layout.

### Does “complete” include the finished surfaces?

List who opens the walls or floor, protects the room and handles waterproofing, tile, drywall and paint. Those responsibilities may sit outside the plumbing contract. An allowance for another trade needs to be visible when you compare the total budget.

### What happens if the opened wall reveals more work?

Agree on how a concealed problem will be shown, priced and approved. Also establish when the plumbing is tested and when surfaces can be closed. The contract should make clear who pays for a design change or an extra visit.

More about what the plumber checks

CHECK THE RECOMMENDATION

## Three bathroom details that are cheaper to settle before the wall closes

Valve orientation, tub piping, toilet support, and fixture fit can turn into expensive callbacks after tile is finished.

01 **Does the shower lack hot water while nearby sinks get hot?****+**

That pattern points toward the shower valve, hot inlet, balancing part, cartridge, or temperature limit, not the water heater first.

The fix may stay at the shower valve instead of adding water-heater work to the remodel.

Sources [Moen Incorporated ↗](<https://solutions.moen.com/FAQ%27s/FAQ%27s-Troubleshooting/Bathroom/Water_temperature_is_not_HOT_enough_on_tub_shower_units>)[Moen Incorporated ↗](<https://solutions.moen.com/FAQ%27s/FAQ%27s-Troubleshooting/Bathroom/No_COLD_%28just_hot%29_or_No_HOT_%28just_cold%29_water_on_tub_shower_units>)

02 **Does the shower run while the tub is filling?****+**

Water can climb to the showerhead when the tub spout or hidden piping slows it down. Extra fittings, the wrong pipe, bad spacing, or a valve installed the wrong way can all cause it.

Changing a spout is small. Correcting hidden tub piping after tile is not.

Sources [Moen Incorporated ↗](<https://solutions.moen.com/FAQ%27s/FAQ%27s-Troubleshooting/Bathroom/Water_comes_out_of_the_showerhead_when_the_tub_spout_is_being_used>)[Moen Incorporated ↗](<https://solutions.moen.com/Article_Library/What_is_a_Stacking_Leak%3F>)

03 **Is the toilet flange and floor ready for the new toilet?****+**

A bad flange, weak floor, rough-in adapter, or poor support can leak only when the toilet flushes.

The quote can separate a normal set from flange or floor correction before the toilet is installed.

OTHER WORK THE QUOTE MAY NEED

### What can add to the job?

- Fixture count, model and moved versus existing locations
- Drain, vent, water and slab or framing modifications
- Access through finished walls, floors, ceilings and occupied rooms
- Waterproofing, valve, specialty shower, bidet and accessibility features
- Permits, inspections, sequencing, testing and change orders

THE QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING

## Get the missing details answered.

1. The ceiling below is already open. What is worth checking now?
2. Does the plumbing price include finishing the bathroom?
3. Who coordinates framing, waterproofing, tile, electrical and finish repair?
4. What inspection and test milestones occur before walls or tile close?
5. How are concealed conditions and owner-selected fixture changes approved?

[Got the details? Check your quote ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/second-opinion/?service=bathroom-remodel-plumbing>)

### Different name on the quote?

Search the company, its DOPL-listed DBA or the license number. Check the business separately from the price.

[Look up the contractor ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/licensed-contractors/>)

A DIFFERENT FIX IS A DIFFERENT PRICE

## Repair it, or replace it?

Are the fixtures staying in the same locations?

REPAIR

### When repair is worth pricing

Retain sound rough-in and repair or replace individual fixtures when the layout stays put and connections test well.

REPLACEMENT

### When replacement makes sense

Reroute or rebuild piping when the plan moves fixtures, existing material is failing or the rough-in cannot support the new design.

**What decides it**

Keep plumbing rough-in, fixture setting, waterproofing and finish work separately priced and sequenced.

THE WORK **Does this price include putting my house or yard back?** +

Get that in writing. Fixing the pipe may not include closing the wall, replacing concrete or repairing the lawn. Ask what you will be left with and who pays if the crew finds more work.

### Ask to see

- Pipe work, cleanup and repairs to walls or the yard.
- Anything the price does not include.
- How you approve extra work and its price.

### When they may be right

Hidden damage can add work. You should know how changes will be handled before the job starts.

YOU CAN SAY

When you leave, what will be fixed and put back? What costs extra, and will you ask me before adding work?

Read the detail

Put the finish line in writing: repaired pipe, closed walls, restored concrete, or all of those? Utah DOPL’s sample construction agreement provides a written process for changes in work, cost and time. It is a useful comparison for a proposal, not a statement that every contract uses that form.

CHECK THE SOURCE [Utah DOPL: sample residential agreement, section 5.2 ↗](<https://commerce.utah.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Residential-Construction-Agreement-2025-05-29.pdf#page=8>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/bathroom-remodel-plumbing/#claim-restoration-scope>)

THE PRICE **Which package do I actually need?** +

Start with the lowest-priced option that fixes the problem properly. Then ask what the next level adds. A fancy name does not tell you whether you are buying better equipment, more work or a longer warranty.

### Ask to see

- All package prices on one page.
- The repair included in each.
- Extra parts, work and warranty coverage.

### When they may be right

An upgrade can be worth paying for. You should be able to say what you are getting for the extra money.

YOU CAN SAY

Show me all the prices. Which option fixes my problem properly, and what does the extra money buy?

Read the detail

A package name tells you little about the work. Get the cash total and scope for every option, then identify which one corrects the diagnosed fault. Compare the extra equipment, warranty and service promises separately.

Why we ask this

ServiceTitan’s public playbook describes commissioned technicians at a seven-franchise Roto-Rooter group and training that withholds prices during the explanation. It also describes the intended benefits of clearer options. This is a specific example, not a policy established for every plumber or franchise.

CHECK THE SOURCE [ServiceTitan: option-presentation training and franchise example ↗](<https://www.servicetitan.com/guides/contractor-playbook/presenting-options>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/bathroom-remodel-plumbing/#claim-tiered-options>)

THE PRICE **It took 30 minutes. Why does it cost that much?** +

Check whether you agreed to a price for the whole repair or to pay by the hour. A repair price may cover travel, parts and business costs too. A quick job does not mean that money is the plumber’s hourly pay. For hourly work, check the time charged.

### Ask to see

- The price you agreed to.
- What the repair includes.
- The hours and hourly rate, if that is how you are paying.

### When they may be right

Skill can make a repair quick. Compare the complete job and price, not just the minutes spent inside.

YOU CAN SAY

Am I paying for the whole repair or by the hour? What is included, and what could cost extra?

Read the detail

First check what you agreed to buy. A fixed task price is not a timesheet: the company may build it from estimated labor, materials, overhead and profit. Finishing quickly does not tell you what the technician earns or make the bill automatically wrong. If the agreement was hourly, the rate, billing increments and time charged are the relevant comparison.

KEEP THE JOB AND THE PRICE TOGETHER

## Before you say yes.

What should be checked before the work is priced?

- Review the scaled plan, fixture models, mounting locations, drain centers, valve heights and accessibility goals.
- Inspect existing water, drain, vent and framing routes before demolition, including slab, joist and finished-wall constraints.
- Confirm fixture requirements, supply sizes, waterproofing interface, electrical needs and who owns each trade handoff.
- Set pressure, drain, leak and function tests before tile, cabinetry and finishes conceal the work.

The parts of this job—and why they matter

### Fixture schedule

List every toilet, lavatory, tub, shower, valve, drain, bidet, and accessory with its model or allowance.

### Rough-in layout

Same-location replacements differ from moving drains, vents, water lines, walls, or slab piping.

### Project phases

Demolition prep, rough-in, test, inspection, fixture setting, trim, and return visits should be counted.

### Trade boundaries

Tile, waterproofing, framing, drywall, cabinets, glass, electrical, and general contracting are separate unless named.

Quote shortcuts worth questioning

- A remodel is priced by bathroom count with no fixture plan.
- A new shower or toilet location is promised without checking drain, vent and framing routes.
- The quote says ‘complete bathroom’ but omits waterproofing and trade boundaries.
- No pre-close testing or change-order process is provided.

### One bathroom total with no fixture schedule

The room name does not define how many connections, moves, valves, or return trips are included.

### Rough and finish work mixed together

Separate phases make allowances, change orders, and trade readiness easier to understand.

### Waterproofing assumed to be plumbing

Confirm which contractor owns the shower pan, membrane, flood test, drain connection, tile, and warranty.

### Fixtures selected after the plumbing price

Valve bodies, drains, mounting systems, flow demand, and rough dimensions can change the work.

More scope details and possible extra work

### Confirm these inclusions

- Fixture-by-fixture plumbing scope
- Rough-in locations, materials, valves, drains, and vents
- Pressure and drain testing
- Permit and inspection responsibility
- Return trip for fixture setting and trim
- Clear fixture allowances and trade exclusions

### Conditions that add work

- Moving a toilet or opening a slab
- Adding a shower, tub, body sprays, or steam equipment
- Old branch piping uncovered during demolition
- Specialty or owner-supplied fixtures
- Schedule changes, failed inspections, or unready finishes

THE DETAILS PEOPLE ASK ABOUT

## Bathroom remodel plumbing questions

The ceiling below is already open. What is worth checking now?

Exposed plumbing is worth assessing before it is covered again, especially connections that would otherwise sit above a finished ceiling. That does not make replacement automatic. Price any recommended work separately, with the reason for it. The saving is avoiding a second round of access and restoration—not a rule that every old pipe has to go during a remodel.

[Link to this answer ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/bathroom-remodel-plumbing/#answer-602bb73f6057>)

Does the plumbing price include finishing the bathroom?

Ask who handles demolition, waterproofing, tile, drywall and painting. Also confirm the return visit to set the toilet and install the faucet and shower trim. A rough-in price—the pipes installed before walls are closed—is not a finished-bathroom price.

[Link to this answer ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/bathroom-remodel-plumbing/#answer-8e91187452d0>)

Can I keep the same rough-in with new fixtures?

Often, if models fit and existing water, drain, vent and shutoffs are sound. Confirm dimensions and connection requirements before ordering fixtures.

[Link to this answer ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/bathroom-remodel-plumbing/#answer-479914ab51da>)

Can the shower cartridge be changed without opening the wall?

Often, yes. The cartridge is a replaceable part inside many shower valves, normally reached through the opening behind the handle and trim. Replacing that part is different from replacing the valve body inside the wall. Damage to the body or unavailable parts may change the options, but an old handle or a difficult cartridge removal does not automatically establish that the wall must be opened.
