REMODEL PLUMBING / UTAH COST GUIDE

# Kitchen remodel plumbing cost, explained.

Cabinets, appliances and plumbing have to meet in the same place. Final model numbers and drawings help prevent the extra visit or surprise drain change that was missing from the original quote.

A SECOND OPINION BEFORE YOU AGREE

## What is missing from the cheaper kitchen plumbing quote?

Compare the final sink, faucet and appliance models, their locations and the visits included. Moving a sink or waiting for countertops can change the pipe work and schedule. Make sure both prices cover the same temporary arrangements, final connections and testing, with any gas or electrical work assigned.

**Ask before you sign**

Does this cover both the pipe changes and the return visit after the cabinets, countertops and appliances are ready?

[Link to this answer ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/kitchen-remodel-plumbing/#quick-answer>)[Evidence and diagnosis ↓](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/kitchen-remodel-plumbing/#cost-factors>)

MAKE THE PRICES COMPARABLE

## Before you approve that quote.

### Are both quotes using the final layout and appliance models?

Compare the sink location, cabinet drawings and actual appliance requirements. If one bid assumes existing connections and another moves pipes, they are buying different work. Settle those choices before treating either total as the finished kitchen price.

### Does moving the sink include access and restoration?

Ask where the new drain and supply will run, particularly for an island. Any opening in the floor, wall or cabinets needs an assigned repair responsibility. A price for pipe work alone may leave a substantial part of the project to another trade.

### How many visits does the plan include?

Plumbing may need one visit before cabinets and another after countertops or appliances arrive. Put that sequence in the proposal, including temporary connections and final testing. Ask which delays or model changes would create an extra charge.

More about what the plumber checks

CHECK THE RECOMMENDATION

## Three kitchen details that prevent the classic new-install callback

Dishwasher drainage, old shutoffs, and pull-down faucet flow are easy to test before the cabinets are full again.

01 **Was the dishwasher plug removed from the new disposal?****+**

A new disposal ships with its dishwasher inlet closed. If the plug stays in, the dishwasher cannot drain through it.

Removing the plug and correcting the hose is much smaller than appliance repair.

02 **Will the old shutoffs survive being used?****+**

An old valve may begin leaking at the stem, body, pipe joint, or connector when it is moved for the remodel.

The quote can name shutoff replacement instead of springing it on the homeowner after removal starts.

Sources [BrassCraft Manufacturing Company ↗](<https://www.brasscraft.com/g2-stops>)[Reliance Worldwide Corporation ↗](<https://www.sharkbite.com/us/en/resources/videos/how-to-install-sharkbite-push-to-connect-stop-valves>)

03 **Does the pull-down faucet have full flow?****+**

A new spray head or screen can catch debris released during plumbing work while the hose still has good flow.

A simple cleaning or head correction avoids replacing a good cartridge or faucet.

OTHER WORK THE QUOTE MAY NEED

### What can add to the job?

- Existing versus moved sink and appliance locations
- Cabinet, island, slab, crawlspace or finished-wall access
- Drain and vent changes, disposal outlet height and dishwasher routing
- Gas appliance load and electrical coordination
- Fixture model, permits, testing, demolition and finish restoration

Tick the details your quote spells out. A checked box means you found the detail—not that the price is fair.

THE QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING

## Get the missing details answered.

1. The dishwasher arrives later. Will I pay for another visit?
2. We are removing an old filter. Is that part of the job?
3. Who handles countertop drilling, cabinets, electrical, gas utility and finish restoration?
4. When will rough-in and final tests occur relative to cabinets and counters?
5. How are model changes, concealed damage and cabinet access changes approved?

### Different name on the quote?

Search the company, its DOPL-listed DBA or the license number. Check the business separately from the price.

[Look up the contractor ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/licensed-contractors/>)

A DIFFERENT FIX IS A DIFFERENT PRICE

## Repair it, or replace it?

Is this a fixture refresh or a new rough-in layout?

REPAIR

### When repair is worth pricing

Reuse sound rough-in and repair or replace fixtures when the layout and appliance positions remain unchanged.

REPLACEMENT

### When replacement makes sense

Reroute piping when the remodel moves the sink, adds appliances, changes gas demand or exposes failing material and inaccessible transitions.

**What decides it**

Separate plumbing rough-in, fixture setting, electrical, gas, cabinetry, stone and restoration so bids remain comparable.

THE WORK **Does this price include putting my house or yard back?** +

Get that in writing. Fixing the pipe may not include closing the wall, replacing concrete or repairing the lawn. Ask what you will be left with and who pays if the crew finds more work.

### Ask to see

- Pipe work, cleanup and repairs to walls or the yard.
- Anything the price does not include.
- How you approve extra work and its price.

### When they may be right

Hidden damage can add work. You should know how changes will be handled before the job starts.

YOU CAN SAY

When you leave, what will be fixed and put back? What costs extra, and will you ask me before adding work?

Read the detail

Put the finish line in writing: repaired pipe, closed walls, restored concrete, or all of those? Utah DOPL’s sample construction agreement provides a written process for changes in work, cost and time. It is a useful comparison for a proposal, not a statement that every contract uses that form.

CHECK THE SOURCE [Utah DOPL: sample residential agreement, section 5.2 ↗](<https://commerce.utah.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Residential-Construction-Agreement-2025-05-29.pdf#page=8>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/kitchen-remodel-plumbing/#claim-restoration-scope>)

THE PRICE **Which package do I actually need?** +

Start with the lowest-priced option that fixes the problem properly. Then ask what the next level adds. A fancy name does not tell you whether you are buying better equipment, more work or a longer warranty.

### Ask to see

- All package prices on one page.
- The repair included in each.
- Extra parts, work and warranty coverage.

### When they may be right

An upgrade can be worth paying for. You should be able to say what you are getting for the extra money.

YOU CAN SAY

Show me all the prices. Which option fixes my problem properly, and what does the extra money buy?

Read the detail

A package name tells you little about the work. Get the cash total and scope for every option, then identify which one corrects the diagnosed fault. Compare the extra equipment, warranty and service promises separately.

Why we ask this

ServiceTitan’s public playbook describes commissioned technicians at a seven-franchise Roto-Rooter group and training that withholds prices during the explanation. It also describes the intended benefits of clearer options. This is a specific example, not a policy established for every plumber or franchise.

CHECK THE SOURCE [ServiceTitan: option-presentation training and franchise example ↗](<https://www.servicetitan.com/guides/contractor-playbook/presenting-options>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/kitchen-remodel-plumbing/#claim-tiered-options>)

THE PRICE **It took 30 minutes. Why does it cost that much?** +

Check whether you agreed to a price for the whole repair or to pay by the hour. A repair price may cover travel, parts and business costs too. A quick job does not mean that money is the plumber’s hourly pay. For hourly work, check the time charged.

### Ask to see

- The price you agreed to.
- What the repair includes.
- The hours and hourly rate, if that is how you are paying.

### When they may be right

Skill can make a repair quick. Compare the complete job and price, not just the minutes spent inside.

YOU CAN SAY

Am I paying for the whole repair or by the hour? What is included, and what could cost extra?

Read the detail

First check what you agreed to buy. A fixed task price is not a timesheet: the company may build it from estimated labor, materials, overhead and profit. Finishing quickly does not tell you what the technician earns or make the bill automatically wrong. If the agreement was hourly, the rate, billing increments and time charged are the relevant comparison.

KEEP THE JOB AND THE PRICE TOGETHER

## Before you say yes.

What should be checked before the work is priced?

- Review cabinet, sink, appliance and island plans with exact models, drain locations and connection heights.
- Trace existing water, drain, vent, disposal, dishwasher, refrigerator and gas routes before demolition.
- Confirm shutoffs, electrical and gas responsibilities, countertop holes, air gap or high-loop details and access after cabinets are set.
- Test every supply, drain, disposal, dishwasher, ice-maker and gas connection before finishes close.

The parts of this job—and why they matter

### Final cabinet and appliance plan

Sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, disposal, filter, pot filler, and gas appliance locations set the connection points.

### Drain and vent route

Moving a sink, especially to an island, can require floor, wall, or specialized vent work beyond a fixture swap.

### Water and gas demand

New appliance specifications determine supply sizes, valves, connectors, pressure, and whether existing piping can serve them.

### Rough and finish sequencing

Cabinets, counters, sink mounting, electrical, and inspections must be ready before the plumber’s return visits.

Quote shortcuts worth questioning

- A kitchen quote is based on room size with no fixture or appliance schedule.
- A sink island is moved without discussing drain, vent and access routes.
- Gas and electrical responsibilities are blended into a vague plumbing allowance.
- No test plan exists before cabinetry and countertops close the connections.

### Quote created before appliance specifications

Connection sizes, locations, fuel, pressure, and valve requirements come from the actual equipment.

### Island sink treated as a standard sink move

Drain slope, venting, floor access, and cabinet layout need a specific plan.

### One allowance for all fixtures

Separate sink, faucet, disposal, filter, dishwasher, refrigerator, and gas items so totals stay comparable.

### Finish visit assumed to be one trip

Missing counters, sinks, appliances, trim, or power can create return visits and change orders.

More scope details and possible extra work

### Confirm these inclusions

- Connection-point plan for every fixture and appliance
- Rough-in pipe, valves, drains, vents, and gas work listed separately
- Pressure and drain testing
- Permit and inspection responsibility
- Finish connections after cabinets and counters
- Fixture allowances and trade exclusions

### Conditions that add work

- Moving the sink or adding an island
- Gas-line relocation or appliance-demand changes
- Old branches found after walls open
- Specialty sinks, fillers, filters, or commercial-style fixtures
- Cabinet, countertop, electrical, and schedule changes

THE DETAILS PEOPLE ASK ABOUT

## Kitchen remodel plumbing questions

The dishwasher arrives later. Will I pay for another visit?

A later appliance delivery can mean another trip unless the finish connection was included. The temporary setup also has to leave the sink and open connections safe to use. Get both visits into the plan before demolition begins. The same applies to a faucet or sink that cannot be installed until the countertop is ready.

We are removing an old filter. Is that part of the job?

Include removing or properly closing its water and drain connections in the quote. If the old installation left a drilled drain section, ask how that section will be restored. Taking away the filter tank is not necessarily the complete removal.

[Link to this answer ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/kitchen-remodel-plumbing/#answer-5fca0552a79f>)

Does dishwasher installation include a new water line?

Only if stated. Confirm water, drain, air-gap or high-loop, shutoff, electrical and cabinet-access responsibility in the scope.

Is a gas range hookup part of kitchen plumbing?

It may involve a gas line, valve and connector, while electrical and appliance work can be separate. The quote should name each responsibility and test.
