BEFORE YOU SIGN / UTAH PLUMBING PRICES

# Know the plumbing sales playbook.

You called about a plumbing problem. Now there’s a tablet full of options, a monthly payment and a decision to make.

Find out what is broken, what will fix it, and what you will pay. Get the answers before you agree to the work.

[Help me check this quote ↓](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#check-the-claim>)[Already have the numbers? Check a quote ↗](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/second-opinion/>)

NOT SURE WHAT TO ASK?

## Start here.

Show me what is broken. What is the cheapest way to fix it properly? What does the extra money buy? Please leave me the written quote so I can think it over.

If they report a safety risk, ask what needs attention right now and have it checked.

**Built from sales-training review, company terms, Utah records and primary technical sources.**

We separate what a source documents from our advice to the reader. Ownership alone does not prove an inflated quote. The same questions apply to a national platform, a franchise and Mountain Man Plumbing, which publishes this site.

FROM AN OFFER TO YOUR FRONT DOOR

## What are you paying for today?

Are they coming to fix something, inspect the house or sell a replacement? Ask before the visit. Find out what you owe if you decide not to buy the work.

Familiarity begins before arrival

The lesson describes passing the caller’s exact wording to the technician, having the technician make the arrival call, and giving the customer space at the door. These are deliberate ways to make the visit comfortable.

**For your decision:** Good communication is worth having. Confirm the visit fee and the technician’s role, then judge the recommendation by the diagnosis and written scope. A smooth introduction does not answer those questions.

Trade Winds · 14 — the sales method · 03:46–06:23, 14:17–15:42 · Original summary from supplied training transcripts.

A future project is not a ready-to-sign job

The lesson discusses avoiding a firm price far ahead of a project because scope, costs and conditions may change. It also discusses qualified estimates when project plans are available.

**For your decision:** Ask for a planning estimate with its assumptions and date, then ask what information is needed for a firm quote. A useful budget can acknowledge uncertainty without pretending the final price is already known.

Trade Winds · 16 — follow-up by buying timeline · 22:31–27:14 · Original summary from supplied training transcripts.

### Before you agree

- Confirm the problem you asked them to look at.
- Ask what the visit fee covers and whether it comes off the repair bill.
- Ask before agreeing to extra inspections or work.

YOU CAN SAY

What does the visit cost? What do I owe if I choose not to have the repair done?

**A clear answer:** They explain the fee, what they will do, and what you pay if you stop there.

WHAT THE SOURCE SHOWS

Friendly Group’s June 2021 Salt Lake City acquisition announcement describes the opportunity to offer plumbing and drain services to Just Right’s existing HVAC customers. That documents a cross-selling strategy at that time; it does not establish an unnecessary recommendation.

02

FROM ONE SYMPTOM TO MORE FINDINGS

## Show me what is broken.

An inspection may find more than the problem you called about. Ask them to show each problem and explain what it causes. A photo of an old part does not tell you whether it needs replacing.

One complaint can lead to a wider conversation

Open questions about the original symptom can bring out other problems in the home. The lesson presents this as better service: the customer has a chance to mention work they also want done.

**For your decision:** Keep a separate line for each problem. Decide which ones you want inspected or repaired today, and confirm any extra charge before the visit grows.

Trade Winds · 14 — the sales method · 18:49–20:08 · Original summary from supplied training transcripts.

### Before you agree

- Ask which finding explains your original problem.
- Separate needed repairs from maintenance and upgrades.
- Keep the photos, test results or sewer video used to recommend the work.

YOU CAN SAY

Which problem caused the trouble I called about? Show me the proof, and price the other work separately.

**A clear answer:** They show the problem, explain it, and tell you which repair fixes it.

WHAT THE SOURCE SHOWS

ServiceTitan describes ProSkill Services’ inspection process: confirm the main concern, continue the inspection after finding the first issue, record other items and take photos. This is a named Arizona contractor example, not a policy established for Utah plumbers.

THE TABLET PRESENTATION

## What does the extra money buy?

Ask for all the prices at once. Find the lowest-priced choice that fixes the problem properly. Then compare what the upgrades add: different parts, more work or better warranty coverage.

The options change the buying decision

The lesson recommends offering a basic repair alongside broader work. Its water-heater example changes the equipment included and the warranty between tiers.

**For your decision:** Ask whether the lowest option completely and properly fixes the diagnosed problem at your home. Then compare the additional work and written coverage. Required installation work belongs in every applicable option; a package label does not decide what is required.

Trade Winds · 15 — presenting options · 00:54–03:40, 04:59–06:02 · Original summary from supplied training transcripts.

Flat-rate time is a pricing input

The pricebook lesson explains how a task price can be built using estimated labor and allowances for time a company cannot bill separately. The internal rate is not the technician’s wage or a statement of elapsed time at your house.

**For your decision:** First establish whether the agreement is a fixed task price or time and materials. For a fixed price, compare complete scope. For hourly billing, check the agreed rate, increments and time charged.

Trade Winds · 9 — pricebooks · 20:34–21:46 · Original summary from supplied training transcripts.

### Before you agree

- Get the full price for each choice.
- Check what parts and work are included.
- Ask whether the cheapest choice includes everything required.
- Compare parts and labor coverage in writing.

YOU CAN SAY

Show me all the prices. Which choice fixes it properly, and what does the extra money buy?

**A clear answer:** They can point to exactly what changes when the price goes up.

WHAT THE SOURCE SHOWS

ServiceTitan’s option-training page describes a seven-franchise Roto-Rooter group using tiered proposals. Its training tips recommend withholding prices during the explanation. The page also presents clearer choices as a benefit; it does not establish that all franchise locations use this sequence.

04

PRICE, REPAIR OR REPLACE, AND SHOPPING AROUND

## You can ask for time to think.

You may want a second quote or someone you trust to read it with you. Ask for a copy you can keep. If there is a real safety problem, have that dealt with and ask which larger decisions can wait.

A lower price can buy less

The lesson discusses reducing warranty coverage or allowing the contractor to choose a convenient installation time when reducing the price.

**For your decision:** Ask for the revised proposal. A discount with shorter labor coverage or a flexible date is a different offer. Compare what changed before treating the lower number as a saving on the same job.

Trade Winds · 19 — price objections · 22:55–23:43 · Original summary from supplied training transcripts.

Follow-up is planned around when you might buy

The lesson distinguishes an immediate need from a decision several days away and recommends agreeing on a time to follow up. It also recognizes that customers obtain other estimates.

**For your decision:** Set a time that works for you. A follow-up call does not create a new equipment problem or authorize work. Ask what changed if the recommendation or price changes.

Trade Winds · 16 — follow-up by buying timeline · 09:00–10:42, 16:18–16:56 · Original summary from supplied training transcripts.

### Before you agree

- Keep the written quote and the reason for the repair.
- If the price expires today, ask what will change tomorrow.
- Ask whether there is a repair choice before agreeing to replacement.
- If the price drops, check whether the parts, work, warranty or date changed.

YOU CAN SAY

Leave me the written quote. I am not deciding right now. What, if anything, makes waiting unsafe?

**A clear answer:** They explain any real risk of waiting and give you the quote to review.

WHAT THE SOURCE SHOWS

Nexstar’s February 2024 bootcamp announcement lists price, repair-versus-replace, spouse and shopping-around objections among its training topics. The author describes improving closing percentage and average sale, while also describing the program as transparent and fair.

05

FROM CASH PRICE TO MONTHLY PAYMENT

## What will you pay in total?

Start with the price without a loan. Then add up the payments and fees. A smaller monthly payment can mean paying for more years. Ask what happens if you miss a no-interest payoff deadline.

### Before you agree

- Get the price without financing.
- Check the interest rate, fees, number of payments and total repaid.
- Read any no-interest deadline and what happens if a balance remains.

YOU CAN SAY

What is the price without a loan? What will all my payments add up to, and when could extra interest be charged?

**A clear answer:** You can see the full cost and lender’s terms before agreeing to borrow.

WHAT THE SOURCE SHOWS

ARS advertises technician-assisted financing during a visit. Separately, CFPB explains that deferred-interest credit-card promotions can charge interest back to the purchase date if the promotional balance is not paid in full on time. Those card rules should not be assumed to describe every installment loan.

06

TODAY’S SAVING AND NEXT YEAR’S COST

## Does the discount beat the membership fee?

Compare today’s bill with and without the plan. Include the joining fee. Then check future charges, renewal and cancellation. Pay for benefits you expect to use.

### Before you agree

- Include the plan fee in today’s total.
- Check whether renewal is automatic and what it costs.
- Ask whether canceling affects the repair discount or warranty.

YOU CAN SAY

What is my total with and without joining? What will I pay later, and how do I cancel?

**A clear answer:** The plan’s cost and rules are written down so you can compare both choices.

WHAT THE SOURCE SHOWS

Mr. Rooter’s Advantage Plan page lists service discounts, priority scheduling and other benefits. Its national benefits page does not establish what a particular local plan will cost you or all of its contract terms.

07

COMPONENTS, LABOR AND WORKMANSHIP

## If it breaks, what will you still owe?

The maker may cover a part while the plumber charges for the repair visit and labor. Ask whose warranty it is, what it covers and how long it lasts. Keep the paperwork with the model number and receipt.

### Before you agree

- Get the warranty for the exact equipment.
- Check how long parts and labor are covered.
- Ask about fees, maintenance rules and damage that is not covered.

YOU CAN SAY

If this breaks, what would I still have to pay? Show me the parts and labor coverage.

**A clear answer:** They show the written warranty and explain what bills could still be yours.

WHAT THE SOURCE SHOWS

Rheem’s cited tankless certificate separates heat-exchanger, parts and certain labor periods. It excludes costs including permits and disposal. Coverage also depends on the installation and conditions in that certificate; a headline number is not the complete agreement.

08

SCOPE, DEPOSITS AND CHANGES

## What are you signing?

Read the whole document before tapping the tablet. You might be approving work, paying a deposit or applying for a loan. Ask for a copy first, and check the amount, the job and any work left out.

Several repairs can share one setup

The lesson notes that adding several standalone task prices can overstate the work when jobs share travel, setup and a water shutdown. It describes creating a combined package price.

**For your decision:** Ask for one combined scope and total when the repairs share access or setup. There is no automatic discount percentage; the useful question is which work and costs are shared.

Trade Winds · 19 — price objections · 27:32–28:38 · Original summary from supplied training transcripts.

### Before you agree

- Check the work, parts and full price.
- Check when payment is due and when work will start.
- Ask what cleanup and repairs to walls or the yard are included.
- Agree how extra work and charges get your approval.

YOU CAN SAY

Send me the whole document before I sign. What am I agreeing to, what do I pay now, and what could cost extra?

**A clear answer:** You get the paperwork and can see the work, price, payment dates and rules for changes.

THE PRICE **Which package do I actually need?** +

Start with the lowest-priced option that fixes the problem properly. Then ask what the next level adds. A fancy name does not tell you whether you are buying better equipment, more work or a longer warranty.

### Ask to see

- All package prices on one page.
- The repair included in each.
- Extra parts, work and warranty coverage.

### When they may be right

An upgrade can be worth paying for. You should be able to say what you are getting for the extra money.

YOU CAN SAY

Show me all the prices. Which option fixes my problem properly, and what does the extra money buy?

Read the detail

A package name tells you little about the work. Get the cash total and scope for every option, then identify which one corrects the diagnosed fault. Compare the extra equipment, warranty and service promises separately.

Why we ask this

ServiceTitan’s public playbook describes commissioned technicians at a seven-franchise Roto-Rooter group and training that withholds prices during the explanation. It also describes the intended benefits of clearer options. This is a specific example, not a policy established for every plumber or franchise.

CHECK THE SOURCE [ServiceTitan: option-presentation training and franchise example ↗](<https://www.servicetitan.com/guides/contractor-playbook/presenting-options>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-tiered-options>)

THE PRICE **The monthly payment looks small. What will I really pay?** +

Ask for the full price and the total of all payments. A small monthly bill can run for years. With some no-interest offers, missing the payoff deadline can add interest back to the purchase date. Minimum payments may not pay it off in time.

### Ask to see

- The price without financing.
- The interest rate, fees, number of payments and total paid.
- The no-interest deadline and what happens after it.

### When they may be right

Payments can help you afford needed work. Check the full cost before signing.

YOU CAN SAY

What is the full price, and what will all my payments add up to? What happens if I miss the no-interest deadline?

Read the detail

Take the payment back to the full deal: cash price, amount financed, APR, term and total repayment. If the offer uses deferred interest, find the payoff deadline. CFPB warns that a deferred-interest credit-card balance left unpaid at the deadline can trigger interest reaching back to the purchase; minimum payments may not clear it in time.

Why we ask this

ARS publicly offers technician-assisted financing during the visit. That establishes where financing enters the process; it does not establish the terms of any particular loan or deceptive conduct.

CHECK THE SOURCE [CFPB: how deferred-interest card offers work ↗](<https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/i-got-a-credit-card-promising-no-interest-for-a-purchase-if-i-pay-in-full-within-12-months-how-does-this-work-en-40/>)[ARS: financing offered during the service visit ↗](<https://www.ars.com/about-us/financing-options>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-monthly-payment>)

THE PRICE **Will the membership really save me money?** +

Add the membership fee to today’s repair bill. Compare that total with the price without joining. Then check what you will pay next year and how to cancel. The discount is only part of the deal.

### Ask to see

- The repair total with and without the plan.
- The membership fee and renewal price.
- The cancellation rules and any effect on your discount.

### When they may be right

A plan can save money if you use its benefits. Count its fees too.

YOU CAN SAY

What do I pay today with and without the plan? What will it cost later, and how do I cancel?

Read the detail

Compare the total with the plan fee included. Mr. Rooter’s published Advantage Plan combines discounts with benefits such as priority scheduling. Ask for the local price, exclusions and renewal terms, then decide which benefits you will actually use.

CHECK THE SOURCE [Mr. Rooter: published Advantage Plan benefits ↗](<https://www.mrrooter.com/about/advantage-plan/>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-membership-math>)

THE PRICE **It took 30 minutes. Why does it cost that much?** +

Check whether you agreed to a price for the whole repair or to pay by the hour. A repair price may cover travel, parts and business costs too. A quick job does not mean that money is the plumber’s hourly pay. For hourly work, check the time charged.

### Ask to see

- The price you agreed to.
- What the repair includes.
- The hours and hourly rate, if that is how you are paying.

### When they may be right

Skill can make a repair quick. Compare the complete job and price, not just the minutes spent inside.

YOU CAN SAY

Am I paying for the whole repair or by the hour? What is included, and what could cost extra?

Read the detail

First check what you agreed to buy. A fixed task price is not a timesheet: the company may build it from estimated labor, materials, overhead and profit. Finishing quickly does not tell you what the technician earns or make the bill automatically wrong. If the agreement was hourly, the rate, billing increments and time charged are the relevant comparison.

CHECK THE SOURCE [ServiceTitan: the costs behind a billable labor rate ↗](<https://www.servicetitan.com/tools/labor-rate-calculator>)[ServiceTitan: flat-rate pricebook construction ↗](<https://www.servicetitan.com/blog/webinar-recap-back2basics-pricebook-101>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-flat-rate-time>)

THE PRICE **They are already here. Can these repairs cost less together?** +

Ask for one price for doing the jobs together. Some work can share the trip, setup or water shutoff. Other repairs need more parts, tools or a return visit. Find out which costs can be shared.

### Ask to see

- One list of all the repairs.
- The price for doing them together.
- Any extra trip, equipment or setup charges.

### When they may be right

Doing jobs together can save time. It does not make the extra parts and work free.

YOU CAN SAY

What is the price for doing these jobs together? Are any trip or setup costs being charged more than once?

Read the detail

Ask for the combined total before adding up separate repair prices. Jobs may share the drive, setup, access or a water shutdown; other tasks may need different equipment or a return visit. Ask which costs repeat and which do not. There is no reliable universal discount percentage.

CHECK THE SOURCE [ServiceTitan: flat-rate pricebook construction ↗](<https://www.servicetitan.com/blog/webinar-recap-back2basics-pricebook-101>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-shared-setup>)

THE PRICE **The price dropped. What did they take out?** +

Ask for a new written quote and compare it with the first one. Did they change the parts, shorten the warranty or move the work to a less convenient date? Make sure the lower price still buys the job you want.

### Ask to see

- Both written quotes.
- Any change to parts, work or warranty.
- Any change to when the work will happen.

### When they may be right

A smaller job or flexible date may suit you. Know what you gave up for the lower price.

YOU CAN SAY

What changed besides the price? Am I getting the same parts, work, warranty and date?

Read the detail

Compare the first and revised proposals line by line. The lower total may remove a part, shorten labor coverage, change the equipment or leave scheduling to the contractor. A real price reduction on unchanged work is different from buying less. Keep both versions.

CHECK THE SOURCE [Utah Commerce: optional residential construction agreement ↗](<https://commerce.utah.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Residential-Construction-Agreement-2025-05-29.pdf#page=8>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-discount-changes>)

THE PRICE **Will the basic option fix it properly?** +

Ask that before looking at upgrades. The basic option should have a clear purpose and include what is required for that repair or installation. A required part does not become optional because it is listed in a more expensive package.

### Ask to see

- What the basic option fixes.
- The required parts and work.
- What the more expensive options add.

### When they may be right

More capacity, better equipment or a longer warranty may be useful. Those choices should be clear.

YOU CAN SAY

Will the basic option fix this properly and include everything required? What do I get by spending more?

Read the detail

The lowest package should have a clear job to do. Ask what it repairs and whether it includes the installation work required for your equipment and home. A broader package can buy better equipment or longer coverage. Work required to make the chosen installation comply is not optional just because it appears under a premium label.

UTAH LICENSE CHECK **Is the person doing the work a licensed plumber?** +

Check both the company and the person. Ask for their names and license numbers. Utah’s online lookup shows the license type, such as apprentice, journeyman or master. The company’s license does not tell you which license the person at your door holds.

### Ask to see

- The company name and license number.
- The name and license number of the plumber doing the work.
- The license type and whether it is active.

### When they may be right

A job does not always need a master plumber doing every task. Journeymen and apprentices working under the right rules can do plumbing too.

YOU CAN SAY

What is your name and plumbing license number? Who will do the work, and what is their license type?

Read the detail

Those are separate checks. Look up the business named on your proposal, then the individual who will do the plumbing. Utah lists apprentice, journeyman and master plumbing licenses, including residential classifications. A company logo, job title or contractor license number does not establish that person’s individual license level.

CHECK THE SOURCE [Utah DOPL: verify an individual or company license ↗](<https://secure.utah.gov/llv/search/index.html>)[DOPL: plumbing license classifications ↗](<https://commerce.utah.gov/dopl/plumbing/>)[DOPL: current plumbing laws and rules ↗](<https://commerce.utah.gov/dopl/plumbing/laws-and-rules/>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-individual-license>)

UTAH LICENSE CHECK **Can an apprentice plumber work alone?** +

An apprentice is still learning the trade. Utah has rules about supervision, with some exceptions. Ask who is in charge of the work. If the company says no supervisor is needed, ask which rule allows it and check with DOPL, Utah’s licensing office.

### Ask to see

- The apprentice’s license.
- The name and license of the supervising plumber.
- The rule behind any claimed exception.

### When they may be right

Apprentices belong in the trade. They also need to meet the rules for the work they are doing.

YOU CAN SAY

Who is supervising this job? If no supervisor is needed here, show me the rule that allows it.

Read the detail

An apprentice credential is not a journeyman credential. Utah’s plumbing framework includes supervision requirements and limited exceptions; the answer depends on the person and work. Ask the company to identify the supervisor and explain the arrangement. If it claims an exception, ask which current provision applies and confirm it with DOPL.

CHECK THE SOURCE [DOPL: plumbing license classifications ↗](<https://commerce.utah.gov/dopl/plumbing/>)[DOPL: current plumbing laws and rules ↗](<https://commerce.utah.gov/dopl/plumbing/laws-and-rules/>)[Utah DOPL: verify an individual or company license ↗](<https://secure.utah.gov/llv/search/index.html>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-apprentice-supervision>)

UTAH LICENSE CHECK **I cannot find them in the business directory. Are they unlicensed?** +

Not necessarily. Utah’s Construction Business Registry is optional. Some licensed businesses are not listed. Use the separate license lookup instead. Search the exact business name or license number.

### Ask to see

- The exact business name.
- The license number.
- A result from the state’s license lookup.

### When they may be right

A business can have an active license without joining the optional directory.

YOU CAN SAY

Please give me your business name and Utah license number so I can check it.

Read the detail

That registry is an opt-in directory. DOPL says it displays active licensees who chose to participate. A missing directory entry is not the same as a missing license. Use the separate License Lookup Verification tool and search the exact name or license number.

CHECK THE SOURCE [Utah Construction Business Registry: participation is optional ↗](<https://db.dopl.utah.gov/cbr/>)[Utah DOPL: verify an individual or company license ↗](<https://secure.utah.gov/llv/search/index.html>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-registry-result>)

UTAH LICENSE CHECK **Can the state help me get my money back?** +

DOPL is Utah’s licensing office. It can investigate possible license-law violations, but it does not act as your lawyer or settle your refund claim. Save the quote, bill, payments, messages and photos. If another plumber says the work was not needed, ask for that in writing.

### Ask to see

- The quote, signed paperwork and bill.
- Proof of payment, messages and photos.
- A written second opinion, if you have one.

### When they may be right

Report specific conduct and keep the proof. A high bill alone does not show a law was broken; getting money back may need legal help.

YOU CAN SAY

Please send the photos or test results that showed I needed this work. I want a written explanation of the charges.

Read the detail

DOPL investigates possible licensing-law violations. Its complaint guidance says it does not act as your attorney or settle your monetary dispute. Preserve the proposal, invoice, payments, messages, photos and any independent diagnosis. Those records help explain what was represented and what was actually found. Seeking a refund and reporting a possible violation are separate steps.

CHECK THE SOURCE [DOPL: what a complaint can and cannot do ↗](<https://commerce.utah.gov/dopl/file-a-complaint/>)[DOPL: documents to include with a complaint ↗](<https://services.dopl.utah.gov/s/>)[Link to this answer](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-complaint-refund>)

UTAH LICENSE CHECK **No complaints showed up. Does that mean I can trust the quote?** +

Not by itself. Most DOPL complaints are private. A public search will not show them all. You can check the license and read public disciplinary orders, but still ask why this repair is needed. A complaint or a board discussion is not the same as a finding against a company.

### Ask to see

- The active license record.
- Any public order and what it actually decided.
- The proof behind your repair quote.

### When they may be right

Checking a license helps. It does not tell you which repair your home needs or what it should cost.

YOU CAN SAY

Show me what is wrong and why this work is needed. Please put the repair and full price in writing.

Read the detail

No. License status, public discipline and the merits of your quote are different questions. DOPL says complaints are generally confidential, so public results are not a complete list of complaints. Read any published order for its date, findings and outcome. A board discussion or allegation is not itself a final finding against a contractor.

THE PRICE **They keep calling. Do I have to decide today?** +

A follow-up call does not mean the problem got worse. Ask whether anything changed. Set a time to reply. If there is a real safety risk, get it checked and dealt with; ask which work is needed now and which decisions can wait.

### Ask to see

- Any change in the problem or price.
- The written date when the quote expires.
- What they say must be fixed right away, and why.

### When they may be right

A follow-up can be helpful. A real hazard or a price deadline needs a clear explanation.

YOU CAN SAY

Send me the written quote. I am not agreeing to the job today. Has anything changed that makes waiting unsafe?

Read the detail

A scheduled follow-up is part of a sales process. Ask whether anything changed in the diagnosis, the price or availability. Set a time to respond that fits your situation. If the company says waiting creates a specific safety or damage risk, get that finding and the immediate remedy explained separately from the full project.

THE PRICE **How can I budget if they will not give me a price yet?** +

Ask for a rough estimate that lists what it covers and what could change. The final price may need an inspection or more details. A useful estimate should explain the unknowns, not leave you guessing what the number includes.

### Ask to see

- What the rough price includes.
- What is still unknown.
- What they need to give a firm quote.

### When they may be right

Future prices and hidden problems can change a job. A rough budget and a firm quote are different things.

YOU CAN SAY

Can you give me a rough budget and say what could change it? What do you need before giving me a firm price?

Read the detail

Ask for a planning estimate with assumptions rather than an open-ended price promise. It can state the equipment type, access assumed, work included, exclusions and date. Then ask what inspection or design information is needed for a firm proposal. A future project has uncertainty; naming it makes the estimate more useful.

THE UTAH CHECK

## A company license doesn’t tell you who’s at your door.

DOPL is Utah’s licensing office. Check the company and the person doing the work. Keep the written quote, the reason for the repair and the payment terms.

01 / COMPANY + PERSON

### Look up both.

Ask for the company’s name and license number. Ask for the plumber’s too. The state’s lookup shows the license type and whether it is active.

[Open Utah’s license lookup ↗](<https://secure.utah.gov/llv/search/index.html>)[Missing from the directory?](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-registry-result>)

02 / THE ACTUAL RECORD

### Read the order.

If the state took action, read what happened and what it decided. A complaint or a meeting discussion is not the same as a final decision.

[Find public disciplinary actions ↗](<https://commerce.utah.gov/dopl/agency-and-disciplinary-actions/>)[What a clean search does not prove](<https://utahplumbingprices.com/quote-defense/#claim-discipline-record>)

03 / IF SOMETHING IS WRONG

### Keep the evidence.

Save the quote, bill, payments, messages and photos. Explain what you believe was wrong. DOPL can investigate licensing issues, but it does not settle your refund claim.

THE EVIDENCE BEHIND THIS GUIDE

## Company records. Specific practices.

The research tracks the source, date, company or platform, location and sales stage. A national offer is not proof of one Utah branch’s terms. An acquisition announcement establishes ownership at that time; it does not establish misconduct.

How Trade Winds informed these answers

Trade Winds lessons supplied for editorial review helped map the conversation before, during and after a visit. We use original summaries of those lessons, not their scripts or example prices. They describe business training; they do not establish a policy at a private-equity-owned company. Good service, clear options and respectful follow-up can benefit both sides.

Lesson references appear beside the advice they informed. Automatic transcripts can mishear words, so the summaries do not present a transcript as an exact quotation.

Utah: a platform’s cross-selling strategy

Friendly Group’s June 1, 2021 announcement describes integrating Salt Lake operations and offering plumbing/drain services to another operation’s HVAC customers.

**Scope:** A dated acquisition and integration announcement.

**What this does not show:** It does not prove unnecessary work, a commission structure or current pricing.

Utah: compare the quote with the company’s own promise

Any Hour Services says it offers upfront pricing and that its price stays the same when scope stays the same. Any Hour Group separately records its 2021 formation and investment history.

**Scope:** Public operating-company pricing statement plus dated platform history.

**What this does not show:** These pages do not establish the accuracy of a particular quote or technician incentives.

Sales training: objections are taught as a process

Nexstar publicly describes training to address price, replacement, spouse and shopping-around objections.

**Scope:** The network’s own 2024 training announcement.

**What this does not show:** Membership or training availability does not prove that a local contractor uses a particular script.

Financing offered at the service visit

ARS describes financing assistance by a technician on site, with third-party lending partners.

**Scope:** A national corporate financing page.

**What this does not show:** It does not establish one borrower’s APR or deceptive conduct.

The Utah board records we checked

### September 4, 2024 · Plumbers Licensing Board

The signed minutes identify an investigations report by Bobby Main at 4:20. The board noted the report without taking action on that agenda item. The minutes do not repeat the detailed accounts in the recording.

[Open the official notice, recording and signed minutes ↗](<https://www.utah.gov/pmn/sitemap/notice/931581.html>)

### February 4, 2026 · Electricians and Plumbers Licensing Board

The signed minutes identify Bobby Main’s investigations update at 2:55 and record no board action on that item. An update about an investigation is different from a final disciplinary order. Use the recording for the discussion and the order search for an outcome.
